• House Leaders Pray
Last week, in the first organizational meeting of the 112th Congress, Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) made praying to God the Republicans' first act in power before they launched into the business at hand. Rep. Pence told the members that in 1774, when the first Congress of the United States convened, Rev. Jacob Duche — knowing the rights and freedoms they sought were God-given — opened the September 7th session in prayer using the 35th Psalm, which established a Congressional tradition that continues to this day. Reading the same Psalm, Rep. Pence asked the Lord to come to their aid as they give Him "thanks in the great assembly." (Washington Update)
• Pastor Says Church Needs to Teach: Sin is Sin
Joseph Parker and his wife, Birdie, are co-pastors at African-Methodist-Episcopal (AME) churches in Marks and Clarksdale, Mississippi. Rev. Parker feels the popular reasons given for 72 percent of black children being born to unwed mothers — poverty, lack of education, not being able to find the right man for marriage — are all wrong. The studies do not focus on the moral aspects, he says. He believes that today's society often cuts God out of the picture, leaving people to come up with their own answers which do not work. "For this issue [pregnancy out of marriage], but really with every issue, God's Word has accurate wisdom and counsel to help you know. In other words, God's way is the best way to do anything." Parker points out that preaching and teaching the clear counsel of God's Word is what is needed. It should be preached that sex outside of marriage is sin, that it is wrong and not good for you. It is also not good for us spiritually, socially or economically, he says. [OneNewsNow.com]
